This is Wikipedia, not an AI chatbot. And AI writing isn't permitted on Wikipedia. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 19:16, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, text by LLMs is allowed as long as the content is verified, is it not? - coolgurl5555 ✈︎ (she/her) ✈︎ 19:17, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The LLMs themselves say it's allowed, but they don't really know Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and actively coach people to circumvent them. So no, we really don't allow it. See WP:NEWLLM, which prohibits LLM output in article content, and WP:AITALK which says AI-generated talk page comments may be struck or collapsed.
"Verified" is only part of it. Even if an AI writes factual information, the tone, emphasis, phrasing, and sourcing often leave much to be desired. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 19:25, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Scrolling photos?

    [edit]

Is there a way to have one [[File:name.jpg|thumb|Description]] element, which is capable of displaying multiple photos from a defined set with user input?

E.g. for an article section I'm working on, I want this photo as the primary, but in the same position with scrolling options I want to also show photo 2, photo 3, or photo 4. Each photo represents a distinct period of the attached history paragraph, but they take up too much space if they're all displayed and it's hard to see the boundary between this set and similar sets for other locomotives which also should have a distinct series. If a fixed primary with scrolling extras isn't possible, an automated slideshow between the four photos would be an acceptable compromise.

    Thanks, Anothersignalman (talk) 17:00, 24 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Try using Gallery tag.––KEmel49(📝,📋) 18:59, 24 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Victorian Railways NA class#Preservation - note how there is 1 image for each of the first two steam engines (3A and 6A), but 4 for the third (7A). Each photo represents a different era. I've used a gallery, but I was hoping for a single box on the right margin, the same as the first two entires, with scrolling to automatically flip between the four pictures and their captions. <gallery mode=slideshow> except I can't see a way to compress it into a single, right-side frame like the single images? But since you say the information is about yourself, @Getitright2026, you should not be editing the article directly at all, but should confine yourself to raising edit requests about it.

    [Solved]: Fixing Table Format

    [edit]

I am editing a sandbox article of a politician to be sent as part of a request for edit. Given the subject was known by a different name in 2005 before divorce, the 2005 election results table was missing. However, I am struggling to edit the table at the end to look like the other table, specifically even just to add 2005 Vancouver municipal election#Councillor Election.

How can I accomplish my objectives? Thanks in advance.

@Stanigator: Some template-generated tables have to be edited in the source editor. See Help:VisualEditor#Opening VisualEditor for a way to switch. The table-editing features of VisualEditor rely on the table code being in the edited page. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:05, 27 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
    This isn't possible with Templates... Stanigator (talk) 01:35, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
It's possible to edit template pages with VisualEditor but most templates use code VisualEditor doesn't work on or is awful at. You can start a source edit and manually change action=edit to veaction=edit in the url (any changes will be lost). Just note there is a reason VisualEditor isn't offered by the interface on templates... PrimeHunter (talk) 13:42, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

The main text of the article, which is well referenced, seems to be fairly neutral in tone (assuming all the cited facts are actually correct, which I have not checked). However, the lede does have an acclamatory and purple tone to it: "acclaimed", "one of the most influential", "he forged a recording contract", " a celebrated Tejano singer", "garnered him a nomination".
Xo4v, I think you would be justified in toning down these and perhaps other expressions, in preference to trying to get the Good Article categorization removed, which requires a formal process, not just one user removing the article from the Category. I think this research paper is vetted by a scholarly community here in the case: School of Humanities and Social Science Department of English and Foreign Languages Tezpur University.

Help turning back on error messages for missing named refs?

    [edit]

It used to be that if a named ref did not have an actual ref there were red complaint messages, but I don't see them any more. (This is when you have <ref name=blah/> but no <ref name=blah>foo</ref>.) Right now, at least in my userspace, it just silently doesn't show anything except an empty entry down in the refs.Naraht (talk) 13:09, 26 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@RAMAROJR: - See WP:Donating copyrighted materials and have the photographer (or whoever holds the copyright to the image you want to use) go thru that process. We cannot accept fair-use images of living people; "Wikipedia use only", "non-commercial use only" and "Do not alter" all fall under fair-use as far as we are concerned. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v MUSHROOM 18:09, 26 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Umm . . . I know what you mean by "[falling] under fair-use", but it might seriously confuse somebody new to such matters. So let's try rephrasing what follows the first sentence:
An image with a condition such as "Wikipedia use only", "non-commercial use only" and "Do not alter" cannot be given a Creative Commons copyleft license acceptable for Wikipedia, and therefore cannot be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (and thereby rendered usable for the Wikipedia of any language). Instead, the only possibility for such an image is to upload it to English-language Wikipedia with a "fair use" rationale for use in a specific article. However, we cannot accept a "fair-use" rationale for the upload or use anywhere of an image of a living person.

@Barbara (WVS) one of the primary concerns raised when you last appealed was your lack of edits since it was implemented, which remains true. I very much recommend that you not pursue this until you show a steady history of edits as that's the best way to show you're able to edit productively. Star Mississippi 00:11, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your advice. You make a good point. I have been active on Simple:wikipedia helping to edit and even create some medical content. I would say that I have been editing productively. I don't remember that a steady editing history was recommended before a topic ban could be appealed. But it is still good advice. Best Regards, Barbara 23:44, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'd definitely recommend noting your Simple wiki medical work when you do pursue the removal a that will help. The history isn't required or specifically recommended but one of the opposes noted We have no way of knowing whether Barbara could work without the topic ban, because Barbara has hardly edited since 2019. and that is likely to come up again. I see you're doing some content work here and recommend continuing that as you plan when to appeal. Star Mississippi 01:18, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I need someone's help to edit MECP2 article section

    [edit]

Hi! I hope it's the right place to ask help for this issue:

I need some help fixing the "Interactive pathway map" section in the MECP2 article. Currently the interactive pathway map can not render correctly in both Firefox and Google chrome browser (on my laptop). Currently, the interactive pathway map does not render correctly in either Firefox or Google Chrome. The issue might be related to WikiPathways, WikiPathways closedown, or the rendering itself.

I do not have enough knowledge to fix it, and it contains valuable information, so I don't want to just remove it completely. As a result, if someone with more technical knowledge than me can help fix the section or map. Thanks in advance!

Hello, @Tangmingxyz (I wish people wouldn't use signatures that were completely different from their user names, as it makes it hard to reply to them).
That image comes from a site called WikiPathways (which has no connection with Wikipedia), via a Wikipedia template called Template:MECP2andAssociatedRettSyndrome_WP3584.
I observe that WikiPathways says that they are making some changes in how their site can be accessed, and this may be behind the problem: I don't know.
I suggest asking at Template Talk:MECP2andAssociatedRettSyndrome_WP3584; and if you don't get any response there, at WT:WikiProject Chemistry or at WP:VPT. ColinFine (talk) 09:56, 27 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    CSD 15?

    [edit]

For clarification, would this beautiful draft be deletable under WP:G15? toby (t)(c)(rw) 22:24, 27 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so, and without more information I would decline a G15 for that.
G15 only applies to the two most obvious and egregious' signs of AI-generated content that has not had any human review at all or these would have been caught. They are:
    1. Communication intended for the user such as "here is your Wikipedia article!" or "Would you like me to do X?"
    2. Implausible, non-existent, or nonsensical references Basically, hallucinated references.
That user sandbox does not fit either of those criteria. It does not cite references at all, much less ones that don't exist. I also don't see communication intended for the user.
That said, it definitely reads to me as AI-generated. But it doesn't meet the G15 criteria. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 22:54, 27 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
You could technically argue that Here is a breakdown... is communication intended for the user (although it is arguably meant for the reader; but the chatbot's output seems to assume that the user is the reader). Personally I'd be inclined to bend the interpretation of G15 however necessary to get this utterly offensive, brainless, soulless slop deleted, though, so don't take my word for it. The fact that the user in question believed in any way that this content is suitable for Wikipedia is also grounds for an immediate CIR block in my eyes. Athanelar (talk) 23:49, 27 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Breakdown of active editors

    [edit]

Is there a page or tool that shows me how many active editors there are of each type (autconfirmed, admins, etc.)? I'm curious to know the proportions. I know we have Wikipedia:List of administrators/Active (which doesn't give me a count) but I can't find much else on the general Wikipedia population of active editors. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 02:04, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I can't locate where it was but you can certainly see total number of editor/admins/autoconfirmed users etc. also you can see total number of active users (users who have edited atleast once in last 30 days).––KEmel49(📝,📋) 06:59, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
You can see total number of editor or active editor from this: {{NUMBEROFUSERS}} and {{NUMBEROFACTIVEUSERS}}. See WP:USERS.––KEmel49(📝,📋) 07:11, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, WP:USERS, looking at the source of the "Number of editors" section, points to Special:Statistics, which says there are 273K active users. Some of those are administrators, but there is no breakdown (that I can see) of active administrators. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 14:43, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:List of administrators/Active lists administrators who have made 30 or more edits in the last 2 months. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:00, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
There are 414 active administrators. Incidentally, the most popular starting letter of active administrators' usernames is S with 40. At any rate, with 273,077 active users (defined as users who have performed any action in the last 30 days), there are roughly 1 administrator for every 660 users (rounded up). ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:05, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I was hoping for something showing me a count rather than manually counting entries in a list. Thanks for doing that.
Suddenly I feel the weight of my load, what with monitoring probably 660 active users of which 60 are regulars I trust, and half of the rest seem intent on adding AI slop or satisfying a conflict of interest.
I should probably take a wikibreak when I'm feeling jaded.
We need more active administrators, and a greater proportion of checkusers. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 19:50, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Suspected cross-platform biased edits

    [edit]

I suspect that the same person who previously attempted to remove references to same-sex marriage from a fan-made Wiki and even posted homophobic and transphobic insults is making potentially homophobic edits to Wikipedia. What should I do, if anything? For example, should I ask the fandom wiki's administrator to provide the user's address so they can compare them? Solaire the knight (talk) 11:33, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

They ought not to do so because of data protection laws, and this would certainly not be done by Wikipedia. If you know of (not merely suspect) such edits on Wikipedia, I suggest you report them through the Project page here. Others may have different/better suggestions. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} ~2026-76101-8 (talk) 12:44, 28 April 2026 (UTC)~2026-76101-8 (talk) 12:44, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have any direct evidence, to be honest, but in both cases, it was practically the same deletion of text from sources with the laconic "removal of non-canonical content", and although the user behavior on Wikipedia was much broader, their behavior always echoed those two shows, the articles about which were affected on the wiki I mentioned. Solaire the knight (talk) 12:55, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Their behaviour elsewhere is not our concern If their edits here are problematic, use WP:AIV (for immediate, short-term issues) or WP:ANI (for sustained problems; but usually only after issuing warnings). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:50, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't worry about it unless I noticed that they were potentially continuing similar edits here as well. But now they've stopped again after a warning, so I've decided not to pursue the situation unless they continue to remove queer-related information without discussion. Hi, I am relatively a new editor from Uganda and my account is about 3 weeks old. I've been trying to contribute on some local history topics specifically about Nyanzi Martin Luther, National Sovereignty Bill but have seen its impossible now since all edits made are deleted and even accused of sockpuppetry.
I want to be clear I am not a sock.am just new and still learning Wikipedia’s rules on sourcing, tone and notability.
The reasons why I think these subjects matter
The National Sovereignty Bill and NGO Funding Bill are tracked by International Center for Not-for-Profit Law and has been covered in New Vision our state owned paper.
Martin Luther officially petitioned Parliament and engaged with Deputy Speaker of Parliament of Uganda and the document was received by the clerk to Parliament so there is a legislative activity.
I am not trying to spam, I just want this part of Uganda’s political history in 2026 is represented accurately.
Could someone look at the 2026 sources and advise me . I will do appreciate moving this into a draft.
    Thanks for any guidance. Bugie123 (talk) 19:15, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
You mention that "all edits made are deleted", however the contributions from your account, Bugie123 (talk · contribs), don't show any previous edits relating to the topics you've mentioned here. Those edits would still be there even after being reverted, indicating that you did not contribute them using this account. Have you previously been contributing using another account or while logged out of your account? – Scyrme (talk) 19:27, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I used but I was unaware of that have just seen it here however regarding the topics mentioned i cannot make an edit because I will be blocked as it has been before and when I check the last user was banned due to undisclosed payment and now for me I found the problem of the topic being salted so I can't come up with it. Bugie123 (talk) 19:31, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I first made few edits without login in but not on that topic, they were other then I decided to have an account. Bugie123 (talk) 19:39, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Which article are you referring to? Just the Uganda article? 331dot (talk) 19:55, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Presumably Draft:Nyanzi Martin Luther and Nyanzi Martin Luther (both protected) and Protection of Sovereignty Bill, 2026. TSventon (talk) 20:11, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, those are the topics and the Protection of Sovereignty moves along NGO Funding Bill where the clauses where drafted to National Sovereignty Bill and sources from national independent paper Daily Monitor also shows that, I am inquiring now how is that the petitioner its not allowed to start even a draft about him probably. Bugie123 (talk) 20:22, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
By "topics", you seem to mean what we call "articles". (I don't know who you mean by "the petitioner" or "him".) -- Hoary (talk) 23:45, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The petitioner I mean someone initially behind something legally, this can also be a formal request, you can crosscheck the link attached below. Bugie123 (talk) 01:28, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
But it seems the topic was already on main space when I clicked in the second name without draft, It shows it was already on main space, then what caused the problem but also sovereignty bill article lacks content it should be marked as a stub. Bugie123 (talk) 20:27, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
If by "sovereignty bill article" you mean the article Protection of Sovereignty Bill, 2026, this has been marked as a stub since the day it was created. I don't know what you mean by "the topic", "the second name", or "the problem". -- Hoary (talk) 23:45, 28 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The "second name without draft" means Nyanzi Martin Luther as opposed to Draft:Nyanzi Martin Luther. Nyanzi Martin Luther is also presumably who is meant by "him" in the earlier post.
Looking into it, it appears the draft article has previously been deleted twice for promotional content. I'm unsure if a biography about him could pass WP:NBIO. Searching online there does seem to be some independent coverage of him in the news (eg. The Kenya Times, which includes a short biography), but I don't know if there are enough independent secondary sources with significant coverage to warrant an independent biographical article, particularly as biographies of living people have stricter guidelines. Most of the results listed by Google News are dated to either 3 weeks ago or late 2025, and given his young age it's unlikely deeper digging would reveal sustained coverage. It's probably still too soon for a Wikipedia biography.
The protection on the draft does not block an extended-confirmed editor from creating a new draft at the title, so an editor in good standing would not be prevented from making a biography if it at some point in the future there's enough independent coverage to warrant doing so. – Scyrme (talk) 01:44, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I understand your concern but what do you mean by secondary independent source.so does it mean news publications are all primary sources even New Vision inclusive. Bugie123 (talk) 02:00, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
A secondary source is one that applies analysis, comparison, evaluation, or interpretation to primary sources. (See WP:SECONDARY for more details.) Primary sources are the testimonies, personal accounts, or statements by those directly involved with a topic. News publications are generally secondary sources, however, they may include primary source such as quotes or interviews. For example, the news may broadcast a speech by a politician regarding a policy, which may be followed by a journalist giving commentary or analysis of the same speech. The speech itself is a primary source, but the journalist's commentary is a secondary source. In general, Wikipedia relies on secondary sources as original research by editors is discouraged. This means that editors are discouraged from including their own analyses, evaluations, or conclusions in articles.
An independent source is one which is not published by or affiliated in any way with the subject. For example, if a businessman commissions someone to write an article about their company this is not an independent source. This article might be a secondary source if the author writes it based on their analysis of various interviews with employees, for example, but it wouldn't be independent since they're being paid by the subject they're writing about. (See WP:INDEPENDENT for more details, including more examples.) – Scyrme (talk) 02:36, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I think they exist, crosscheck if possible and see. Bugie123 (talk) 02:47, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Heelo, Cross checking I don't know whether they are the called secondary sources but I see a profile with Watchdog Uganda, another its a comparison story from The Kampala report with the historical Martin Luthers etc. Bugie123 (talk) 02:11, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    About editing

Thank you 𝑾𝒊𝒌𝒊.𝒄𝒐𝒘𝒃𝒐𝒚. 03:07, 29 April 2026 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiki.cowboy (talkcontribs) [reply]

How about editing articles to which caste is obviously irrelevant until you are extended-confirmed, Wiki.cowboy? -- Hoary (talk) 06:15, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
We interpret contentious topics areas like WP:CT/CASTE as "broadly construed". This means that any page, discussion, topic etc which can be even remotely understood as related to the contentious topic is included within it. Any kind of South Asian monarchic history 100% falls under the broadly construed topic of caste (or 'South Asian social groups' as it's properly called).
It should be noted that Indian military history is also under extended-confirmed protection. It'd really just be best to stay away from Indian history topics until you gain XC. Athanelar (talk) 13:16, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear, Pinkish Flowers, what a mess! Conspicuous among the problems is -- at least as I view the page -- "Harv error: link from CITEREFArrian1976 doesn't point to any citation." That is, "Arrian 1976" should be, but isn't, linked to a helpful description of the book, journal article, book chapter, or whatever, that "Arrian 1976" is. This description conventionally goes in a section titled "Sources" that follows "References". If you look at an article such as English coffeehouses in the 17th and 18th centuries you should get the idea. Then do likewise for Foreman 2004, Morkot 1996, Hammond 1983, Yenne 2010, Gergel 2004, Briant 1985, Dani & Bernard 1994, Horn & Spencer 2012, Arrian 1958, Grote 1856, Arrian 1893, Savill 1990, Rhodes 2011. (I have lazily not listed these in alphabetical order, but you should.) If you get stuck, feel free to ask again for help. And once these problems are fixed, there'll still be other problems, but we can get to those later. -- Hoary (talk) 06:36, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
If anything needs further explanation, Pinkish Flowers, feel free to ask. -- Hoary (talk) 23:52, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    First time merging a page

    [edit]

Hi! First time trying to merge pages (History of FC Basel (1893–1939) and History of FC Basel (1918–1939)). This was proposed years ago once copyediting was completed which I have done and consensus has been reached on the merge. I've renamed the destination to accommodate both pages and copied over the content but want to ensure I don't make any errors. The Voivodeship King (talk) 07:42, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

WP:MERGE#Procedure has some key steps. One of the most important is to maintain the attribution chain of content. If you move a page, then the whole history of edits to that page moves along with it automatically. But if you cut and paste content, you have to include details on both the source and destination pages indicating that process. So the edit-summary has to state the exact page-name (not just a general description of it), and you should place {{copied}} on both of the associated talk-pages (see the template docs for details). DMacks (talk) 12:13, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@DMacks Thanks for the help. Wasn't able to find that procedure before but will follow it now. The Voivodeship King (talk) 13:13, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Title for "From summetria to symmetry: the making of a revolutionary scientific concept"

    [edit]

I am writing an article on the book entitled "From summetria to symmetry: the making of a revolutionary scientific concept" by Giora Hon and Bernard Goldstein Is there a way for the article title to appear with the word summetria in normal case and the rest of the article title in italics? I have looked at Template:italictitle but it doesn't seem to cover this particular case. Thanks GreatStellatedDodecahedron (talk) 10:43, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@GreatStellatedDodecahedron I would guess that you will be using Template:Infobox book, which italicises the full tile by default. So your issue is how to stop the italicising of that one word. I've looked at the template documentation and don't see an immediate way to do that, but User:PrimeHunter will almost certainly know how! Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:57, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
{{DISPLAYTITLE}} lets you (mostly) arbitrarily format the title text of an article using standard Wiki/HTML-like markups. DMacks (talk) 12:07, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@GreatStellatedDodecahedron: Template:Italic title#Parameters says: "titles with multiple italicized substrings, or titles needing italicization combined with other modifications not pertaining to case or italicization should use {{DISPLAYTITLE}} directly". Use |italic title=no in {{Infobox book}} to disable the default italics there, and then {{DISPLAYTITLE:''From'' Summetria ''to Symmetry: The Making of a Revolutionary Scientific Concept''}}. It has to spell the same way as the page name including capitalization (except of the first character) so it will work at From Summetria to Symmetry: The Making of a Revolutionary Scientific Concept, but not while the page is at User:GreatStellatedDodecahedron/sandbox. We use title case for book titles so I made capitals. Our own article titles use sentence case but only if it's not the title of work or something else that should use title case. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:06, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to all for the quick and precise answers. GreatStellatedDodecahedron (talk) 13:28, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
We use the WP:COMMONAME for article titles. I didn't find a single source that italicizes "Summetria" differently from the rest of the title, therefore we don't either. Paradoctor (talk) 16:37, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Signature help

    [edit]

My signature fails all sorts of accessibility guidelines in light theme due to low contrast. I'm not great at CSS; is there some code that allows me to set two completely different colours depending on whether it's being viewed in light or dark theme? Ideally I'd like to set it to the default redlink and bluelink colours in light theme, and keep the current colours in dark theme. Thanks. lp0 on fire () 11:29, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Accessibility/CSS colors for text on white has guidance for appropriate colours which meet minimum acceptable contrast standards for accessibility in light mode. I can't seem to find any similar guidance for dark mode, but a good rule of thumb might be to pick some of the 'lighter' colours in that list in the hopes they'll stand out decently on a black background too. For instance, Crimson, MediumVioletRed, RoyalBlue might be good options. Athanelar (talk) 13:11, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the lack of clarity. I wasn't asking for help with choosing colours, but with CSS/wikitext; i.e. is there a way to have the text display in a different colour for light theme than for dark theme? lp0 on fire () 15:53, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
    For yourself, or for others?
For yourself, there probably is a way, but I'm not aware of it; try the wizards at WP:VPT
For others, I doubt it, I'm not sure if there's a way for the code to 'check' the viewer's display preferences. Athanelar (talk) 16:31, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
For others. I think I've partially figured it out, and it probably involves using <span class="skin-invert">. All I now need is to figure out how skin-invert actually works, so I can figure out what colours will invert to give my current signature. lp0 on fire () 16:54, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Help with adding images to tables

    [edit]

How do I upload images to a table? There are some columns with images already but others without them and I want to help put images and fill out the information lacking but I can't figure out how to upload images to a table.

In this case, it is specifically about the illustrations column of the page Roles played by Sarah Bernhardt Kd10697 (talk) 12:27, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello, @Kd10697.
When you say "upload images to a table", you are conflating two processes: you may need to do both, or only one.
The two processes are uploading an image (usually to Wikimedia Commons) and inserting it into an article.
If the images you want are not already in Commons, then you'll need to upload them. It is your responsibility to make sure that their copyright status meets Commons' requirements: if they relate to Sarah Bernhardt, they are almost certainly in the public domain by reason of age, in which case there's no problem putting them in Commons. Assuming this is the case, you can upload them to Commons with the upload wizard.
If/once they are in Commons, you can add them to the article. If you use the source editor, the easiest thing is to look at how this is done for existing rows of the table, and just copy it, changing the name of the file. (Note that you need the complete name of the file, including any extension like .jpg, and you need to get the case of letters exactly right).
If you use the visual editor, I'm afraid I can't help you. (I've heard that its support for tables isn't complete: if that is so, you may have to go into the source editor in any case. But you may be able to do it straightforwardly.) ColinFine (talk) 13:12, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you!! This is really helpful! Kd10697 (talk) 13:13, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Race (biology)

    [edit]

User @Doug Weller has removed the move request made at Talk:Race (biology). Could I ask what the reasons were? ~2026-25896-31 (talk) 12:43, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Doug's edit summary says "rvv", which is Wiki-shorthand for "removed/reverted vandalism". I'm not sure I agree with the assessment that your move request constitutes vandalism, but that is his stated reasoning; maybe he'll come by and explain shortly. Athanelar (talk) 13:06, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @~2026-25896-31. While I don't agree with the move (the article is not solely about botany) I don't understand why @Doug Weller should have reverted it or counted it as vandalism.
However, please note that once somebody has reverted an edit of yours - any edit, for any reason - you should not just reinstate it, as that is the start of edit warring. Instead you should open a discussion with the person who reverted your edit: see WP:BRD. (Since you and I have both pinged Doug here, it's likely that that discussion is going to begin now, hopefully at that talk page.) ColinFine (talk) 13:19, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Because the first sentence is "In biological taxonomy, race is an informal rank in the taxonomic hierarchy " Śo I cannot understand why such a move request should have made> Maybe I should have just reverted it as disruptive as it made no sense. Sorry to be late responsing but I've been doing something I haven't done for a very long time due to my Parkinson«'s, walking around a nearby wooded copse with my wife and dogs and my son getting me there in a wheelchair. But I'm happy for the discussison to continue even if I think it's a terrible idea. Doug Weller talk 14:41, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see the issue now. But I still oppose the move. Doug Weller talk 14:45, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    New article question

    [edit]

I created the content of a Wikipedia page, however, i do not have the time to post it, is there a service that can check SfC compliance and publish it? ~2026-25964-94 (talk) 12:55, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

You can follow the instructions at Help:Your first article to create a draft article and submit it for review via the Articles for Creation system. Otherwise, no, there is no 'appointed third party' (as you worded it in your misplaced draft) who can do this on your behalf; and you should ignore any such offer you now receive as a result of your enquiry, as they are likely to be WP:SCAMs.
It also seems that you might be writing an autobiography; in which case, please heed the advice at WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY; namely, don't bother. Athanelar (talk) 13:03, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
If you can't be bothered to find the time to create your own autobiography why do you think anyone else would? Theroadislong (talk) 14:50, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there I added information under recreation regarding the fact I am the only known person to have paddled the entire east and west forks of the white river in one push as it seems constructive and good for people to know that it’s possible. I respectfully ask why it is not allowed to be added? It seems like a positive thing for people to know and I have GPS evidence to confirm ~2026-26138-83 (talk) 18:19, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Which article were you editing (it wasn't with this TA so your edit history does not help)? We have many articles about various White Rivers. Meters (talk) 18:36, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
A Wikipedia article should be a neutral summary of what the majority of people who are wholly unconnected with the subject have independently chosen to publish about the subject in reliable publications, (see Golden rule) and not much else. What you know (or anybody else knows) about the subject is not relevant except where it can be verified from a reliable published source. Your GPS records are not, unfortunately, a reliable published source. Athanelar (talk) 21:28, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I looked for recently edited articles among the dozens of White River and found the edit [2] which was about White River (Indiana) and completely unsourced. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:41, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
user:Materialscientist's removal of that material was entirely warranted. Meters (talk) 23:56, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@~2026-26138-83 Sorry to say, but I disagree that this info is a "positive thing for people to know". My guess is that 99% of people in the world are not wondering if that is possible, and those who do wonder can try a search engine. I certainly have never wondered that, partly because I have never heard of the river. Sorry again. David10244 (talk) 04:56, 2 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Blackletter font/typeface

    [edit]
    The Mystical Sophia

Hi all, I'm attempting to translate the text content of File:SophiaMystical.jpg. I'm hoping to reproduce the German Blackletter text in English, but also in Blackletter, e.g. 𝔊𝔬𝔡 𝔦𝔰 𝔞𝔫 𝔢𝔱𝔢𝔯𝔫𝔞𝔩 ... 𝔰𝔭𝔦𝔯𝔦𝔱 (Note these are individual Unicode chacters from Blackletter#Unicode.)

But the wikisource template {{blackletter}} at https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Template:Blackletter doesn't seem to work on WP, ({{blackletter}}) and {{font}} doesn't seem to support Blackletter either. I may be missing something. Any suggestions, please? MinorProphet (talk) 22:37, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe I am missing something, MinorProphet; but how would presentation in blackletter of an English translation of what was in German (and printed in Fraktur) be of more assistance to the reader than doing the same with no attempt to supplant the default (almost certainly Roman) typeface? -- Hoary (talk) 23:38, 29 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, @Hoary: many thanks for replying so swiftly. Thanks for your concern: I take your point. It's more of a personal project, not necessarily for general publication on WP or Commons. Anyway, the alchemical subject matter is essentially occult, only for the few. I would expect that those with eyes to see and ears to hear would be able to penetrate the slight unfamiliarity of blackletter. It's not as if I'm trying to До Ит Ин Сйриллик Карактрз... The image and its highly complex accompanying text is not for the entertainment of the masses. A rendering in Roman would be entirely possible with a few simple font substitutions. My point is, is what I seek possible? Best wishes, MinorProphet (talk) 00:14, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
How strange and mysterious: I know that the Jungian term of synchronicity has been widely misusued, but towards the end of the main text these lines appear, which I have only just set eyes on:
Der Augen hat zu sehen, der kann und Wer Öhren hat zu höhren, dem darf man
wird wohl recht sehen. nicht überlaut zurufen.

Those who have eyes to see, they can Those who have ears to hear, they
and will rightly see. should not shout it abroad.

    MinorProphet (talk) 03:17, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Got it, MinorProphet. I think what triggered my perhaps huffy response was the way that -- at least as shown on the screen at which I now peer -- the sample of blackletter looks so unlike the Fraktur that you show (or indeed any that I've seen), and indeed so much like a recent invitation to a funeral (and thus unintentionally ridiculous). Indeed, the blackletter sample is very easy to read (unsurprising, as barriers to funeral attendance mustn't be hard to surmount), whereas Fraktur rather reliably gives me a headache. Though on the third hand, blackletter can be horridly hard (for me) to read. -- Hoary (talk) 01:17, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hoary, many thanks for your interest. The nomenclature of all these obsolete Fraktur/Blackletter typefaces is relatively complex, obsequies notwithstanding. I don't have much difficulty with reading any of them: having being introduced to German at school, I found myself having to decode the old German scripts because certain texts that interest me are only available in the original 'Fraktur'. I am not intending to attempt an exact reproduction of the German typology in English characters, although it might be fun. A vague approximation is what I'm after, like in my OP. However, my original question still stands: is what I seek possible? (In terms of fonts/typefaces on WP, at least: the Magnum opus itself is deliberately and annoyingly difficult of access and comprehension.) :>) MinorProphet (talk) 01:43, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@MinorProphet I'm curious... If this request is not necessarily for publication on Wikipedia, why are you trying to accomplish this within Wikipedia? David10244 (talk) 04:21, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    @MinorProphet Yes, of course I can read that... David10244 (talk) 09:46, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I am merely hoping to reproduce the physical appearance of the image, but in English. The subject matter is recondite and wholly mysterious. A little more effort than Swiping Left on Grindr is required. I am entirely incompetent to deal with any isssues arising from Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Assessment, but I suggest this is considerably easier. MinorProphet (talk) 05:09, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@MinorProphet Bringing your personal magnetism is always important! David10244 (talk) 09:47, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
s:Template:Blackletter looks like it just sets fonts (as seen at s:Template:Blackletter/styles.css) rather than (ab)using the mathematical Fraktur letters in unicode. Like so. It doesn't do anything for me, since I don't have the fonts installed. I doubt it will for hardly anyone else, either. —Cryptic 05:46, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Cryptic: Thanks very much for your constructive comments. I have achieved the same sort of paltry results. I have merely been employing the mathematical Fraktur Unicode to demonstrate the sort of effect I am hoping to achieve. Here are some other Unicode characters I use most days, since I don't have a German keyboard:
Alt + 132 = ä; Alt + 148 = ö; Alt + 129= ü. I can never remember ß, but it's in the editor Character Subset table anyway. Is this Unicode abuse? I am merely attempting to find out if it is possible to use any sort of template or CSS style to achieve this 'Fraktur'-style formatting. Interestingly, and despite the high level of involvement of editors here, no-one seems able or willing to deny or confirm whether this is the case or not. I understand Wikipedia requires neutral tone, reliable independent references, and no promotional wording. If any edits did not meet those standards, I apologize. I’m happy to work through the proper process, discuss changes on the talk page, and add only well-sourced factual updates going forward. ~2026-25816-56 (talk) 13:37, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, you'll want to follow our guidelines on conflicts of interest (which amount to disclosing any COIs you have and not editing directly). The plain and simple COI guide provides a good explanation, but the TLDR is that you should:
    1. Make an account with a username that doesn't imply you represent your organization as a whole, so that your disclosure doesn't get lost when you change computers.
    2. Put a disclosure on your user page.
    3. Refrain from directly editing your page, instead making COI edit requests. MetalBreaksAndBends (talk) 13:55, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Can’t see how to fix a couple of harv refs I messed up

I moved some stuff from bicycle to History of the bicycle and caused cite errors on Herlihy2004 and Norcliffe2001. As I never use harv refs when I write articles I can’t see how to fix these. Sorry but I would really appreciate your help as I find harv refs extremely confusing Chidgk1 (talk) 08:11, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@Chidgk1: "This, I am trained for." (Steven Seagal in Under Siege 2.) Please hold. Harvs are relatively complex with many traps for the unwary. You're not the first to be waylaid. I used to have a short tutorial somewhere, I may resurrect it. At any rate, at first sight the lede is like an essay in itself, and needs drastically shortening. Probably nothing to do with you. MinorProphet (talk) 12:41, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Chidgk1: The article mostly uses re-usable refs, with the form <ref name=Smith> Some cite </ref>, followed by <ref name=Smith /> when the same cite is needed further down. This style is relatively easy to use and doesn't require the mastering of somewhat complex templates. You have used {{sfn}}s, which I personally generally prefer, but they require a steep learning curve. Both types have pros and cons. However, the two styles often don't mix. Within any given article it's best to keep to one style, and most of the citations use the <ref name=> type. Despite your obvious and commendable enthusiasm for {{sfn}}s and {{harv}}s, I'm going to convert your additions to <ref name=> + {{rp}} to maintain the article's reffing style. The other problem is that the {{cite book}}s for Herlihy2004 and Norcliffe2001 have been given twice, once in the {{reflist}}, and once in the 'Further reading' section. This makes the parsing software throw a purple wobbler. Working on it. MinorProphet (talk) 13:29, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Create page for business

    [edit]

I work for a local bank that has been in business since 1901. We have had many prominent people involved in the creation and growth of the bank, as well as much historical significance in the growth of our area. I tried to create a Wikipedia page for the bank, but Wikipedia editors denied it because I am an employee. How can a business, with historical significance, get listed on Wikipedia if we are not allowed to create the page? Graphmaster (talk) 16:45, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@Graphmaster: This seems to be about Pioneer bank, which was deleted because it was promotional and did not indicate the importance of the organisation, not because you were an employee. There is some good advice from Pigsonthewing on your talk page. If you are sure that you can demonstrate that the subject unambiguously meets the requirements at WP:NCORP, and that you can edit it in a neutral fashion, you may request its undeletion as a draft by asking at WP:REFUND, and work on it in that form. When ready, you can submit it for review using the process described at WP:AFC. A neutral editor will then either publish it, tell you want more needs to be done, or delete it again if you can not meet the requirements. TSventon (talk) 17:13, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I will work on the verbiage then. I appreciate the response. Graphmaster (talk) 18:10, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Graphmaster Whether the draft gets accepted as an article depends, as TSventon is saying, on whether you can find reliable, published, independent sources that are about the bank. The prominence of people involved in its growth does not matter, unless you can find published info that covers this. David10244 (talk) 05:01, 2 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I am not an admin but I don't think an edit summary that is incorrect by a good-faith misunderstanding falls under any of the criteria in Criteria for redaction. I'd also suggest reading How to request revision deletion on the same page for future requests. Skynxnex (talk) 20:08, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Templates North American national archives, List of national archives worldwide

    [edit]

I'm not permitted to edit them. Could somebody update the Belize entry to show the current name, Belize Archives and Records Service? Clarityfiend (talk) 00:13, 1 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

See Template talk:North America topic#Template-protected edit request on 18 April 2026 for refusal of a similar request. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:27, 1 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Basically, the April request got rejected (and yours would too) strictly for technical reasons. These "continent topic" templates are a list of countries with a parameter permitting a certain element to be supplied, and individual links cannot be customised. For example, at List of national archives, the "list of national archives worldwide" template is actually {{World topic}} with the following code:

    {{World topic|title=List of [[national archives]] worldwide|prefix=National Archives of|state=plain}}

As you can see, all that can be customised is the header, an appearance item, and the link, which for every country produces a link to "National Archives of" for every country. Any change to the "prefix" parameter would modify every single link in the template; it's impossible to modify just a single country. Nyttend (talk) 20:04, 1 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Troubleshooting Live preview

    [edit]

I can't seem to get Help:Show preview#Live preview working, when I edit a page I just see the regular edit box. In my Preferences I have Show preview when starting to edit and Show preview without reloading the page globally ticked. I am using desktop and I have seen the nice side-by-side live preview on another Wikipedian's account in-person before. Commander Keane (talk) 00:56, 1 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I would really appreciate some advice and help as I am confused about what I am expected to do? If it could be explained as if I were a 5yr old that would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

UKresearcherTV one of the references has the author name "|last=updated |first=Laura Morgan last" and the bot has recognised that "|last=updated" is probably an error. There was also a message in red after reference 9 "{{cite web}}: |last= has generic name". I have corrected the author name to "|last=Morgan |first=Laura". Duplicate refs caused by excerpt template

    [edit]

I looked at Climate change in the Arctic today. It has a template at the top noting that there are duplicated references that (according to the template) should be turned into WP:NAMED references. However, a more detailed investigation shows that the duplicates only occur because the article makes extensive use of template:excerpt and the duplication is a side-effect of that: doi:10.1029/2022GL099371, for example, comes from one direct use and one use introduced by an excerpt. Is there an accepted way to deal with this? Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:44, 1 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, stop using excerpt. DuncanHill (talk) 14:45, 1 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
There are 16 (!) uses of the excerpt template in that article, so presumably editors have in the past agreed that's the best way to ensure it updates when the linked articles do. Maybe User:Yiosie2356 should reconsider their tagging. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:59, 1 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Disruptive content in a rollback edit summary

    [edit]

    From WP:Rollback:

Also, do not use the default rollback edit summary when it will contain disruptive text which may need to be revision-deleted. For example, avoid use of the default edit summary to revert edits made by an account with an unambiguously offensive, insulting, or egregious username that violates Wikipedia's username policy. MediaWiki rollback automatically includes the username of the editor who made the edits you are removing.

I'm well aware of the username issue, but are there any other potential issues? If the last two editors have appropriate usernames, I can't think of a way in which the default summary could contain disruptive text, but one doesn't generally say "For example" and then give the only possible situation. Of course, per BEANS, if there is such a way, don't mention the details; I just want a yes/no answer. Nyttend (talk) 19:57, 1 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 7.1 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Help article for after a draft is moved to mainspace?

    [edit]

Hi! I'm an AFC reviewer but I'm posting here because I think it's not just relevant for AFC and someone else might be able to help me out. Is there a help article or checklist that walks you through what to do after moving a draft to mainspace, or like, after the "content" part of an article is done? Something like, adding categories, making sure it's not an orphan, adding an infobox. AFC helper does some of this (like categories) but I always feel like there's more I'm forgetting. I feel like Wikipedia:Women in Red had something like this somewhere but I don't know where it is or if there's a more general one.... Thanks! SomeoneDreaming (talk) 23:51, 1 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

SomeoneDreaming I had a look at Women in Red essays and I think this one does what you want. Presumably as an AfC reviewer you will have checked notability and sources already, so you can probably skip those sections.

    Help with deleted page

    [edit]

I am trying to figure out why Michael Shane McGuire was deleted so rapidly. It seems to meet the necessary criteria for a page, with many references to outside sources to confirm validity. Tish225 (talk) 08:11, 2 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@Tish225 It was deleted for being "Unambiguous advertising or promotion" which is simply not permitted on Wikipedia. Shantavira|feed me 08:15, 2 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Shantavira Thank you for the reply. I am not trying to make it an advertising page. I am trying to document some of the subject's affiliations and publications. As the lead attorney on some notable, controversial cases, he is prominent in this area. Do you have any advice on what I can exclude to help build out the page correctly? Tish225 (talk) 08:23, 2 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Tish225: - biographies of legal professionals are not my area, although I have created one - Anthony Hidden. Just stick to facts and try not to embellish his achievements. Independent sources are a must. Mjroots (talk) 09:57, 2 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
    @Tish225 Have a read through WP:PROMO, WP:Yes, it is promotion and MOS:PUFFERY.
Promotion is not usually a matter of a simple tone issue, but rather an evident philosophical issue with the way that the article is constructed.
Articles which get deleted under G11 unambiguous promotion are typically articles where it is self-evident from the article content that the purpose of the article is not to neutrally, encyclopedically document the subject, but rather to promote them; often one of the subtler forms of promotion outlined by WP:YESPROMO rather than a more obvious kind of advertisement we think of when we hear "promotion" Athanelar (talk) 10:25, 2 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
